The Evolution of the Freightliner Cascadia

Freightliner Trucks is considered to be America’s leading builder of heavy-duty trucks although the company is also known to manufacture a variety of vans and medium-duty trucks. Early on, the cabover semi-tractors became popular with their massive promotion of the trucks they named “Freightliner Argosy”. Although the company was founded in 1929, it was only in 1930 that Freightways Manufacturing branded its truck production under the name “Freightliner”.

How The Freightliner Cascadia Evolved

Here’s a brief timeline of the Freightliner C series:

  • 1996 Freightliner Century Class – the first totally new Class 8 conventional the company had ever made in more than 20 years, was introduced.
  • 1999 – Freightliner Argosy was launched.
  • 2001 – When production of the FLD ended, the Century Class became the flagship model. FLD models  were the class 8 trucks with square noses.
  • 2002 – Freightliner Columbia was inaugurated when the Century Class was still the flagship model. Interestingly, the former was initially marketed for fleet application while the latter was for owner-operators.
  • 2007 – Freightliner Cascadia was born – a new-generation Class 8 conventional meant to be the successor to Century Class and Columbia. The new truck was enhanced for safety, fuel efficiency, and reliability.
  • 2010 – The US plant still produced the Century Class although the newly-designed Freightliner Cascadia formally replaced the Century. Eventually, the Columbia and Century were discontinued in North America.
  • 2012 – Together with the Cascadia, close to 20 percent of trucks built by the plant, which included Argosy and Century Class, were sold to Australia, New Zealand, and Africa.
  • 2013 – Cascadia Evolution was launched as a superior option for the Cascadia, being an additional natural-gas version of the latter.
  • 2020 – The Century Class was no longer included in its export market in favor of the Columbia which was still being manufactured. The Century, considered as the more expensive conventional truck model, is now being dominated by the Cascadia which also substituted the Argosy cabover.

The Freightliner Cascadia 

This heavy-duty semi-trailer truck which is the flagship model of Freightliner has been created with its most important feature in mind – fuel efficiency.
